Being one of the main characters in the novel “The Hobbit“, Thorin Oakenshield, son of Thráin, son of Thrór, King Under the Mountain, is bound to come with great responsibility for his people. Together with a company of dwarves, a wizard and Bilbo Baggins, they set out with an unexpected journey to reclaim the Lonely Mountain from one of the last great dragons of Middle-Earth – the dragon Smaug.
The appearance of Thorin in “The Hobbit” series revolved around his quest to bring back not only the dwarves’ mountain and great treasures but also the Arkenstone – an heirloom of his house. With the great advice of the wizard Gandalf, Thorin, a haughty and stern dwarf, visited a burglar named Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit in comfortable middle age at 50 years old, in the Shire in stealing the treasure back.
Throughout their expedition to the Lonely Mountain, the company led by Thorin encountered a number of dangers enduring wargs, trolls, orcs and spiders. As they finally reached their final destination, the burglar discovered the weakness of the dragon which in the end resulted in the dragon’s defeat. They eventually reclaimed the Erebor, the treasure and their honor but not the Arkenstone as Bilbo had already found it.
Here’s a collection of ferocious digital illustrations of Thorin Oakenshield representing his noble appearance as a great warrior and as the King under the Mountain and of Durin’s Folk.
