If there is someone who displays so much love and obsession about the One Ring in the novel The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, it was the poor, ruined creature living in a dark cave beneath the Misty Mountains named Gollum, originally known as Sméagol. He was known as Gollum because of his habit of making “a horrible swallowing noise in his throat”. Due to the influence of the ring, his age was between 570 and 600 years old.
Gollum, the small, slimy creature, was the one who kept the ring for a very long time after strangling Déagol when he refused to give it as a birthday present. After Bilbo Baggins found the Ring in the network of goblin tunnels leading down to the lake and took it for his own, the sneaky creature pursued it for the rest of his life. Gollum left his lair to search for the Baggins a few years after losing the Ring but the trail was cold.
After he descended into Moria, he began following the Fellowship of the Ring. Gollum followed them all the way to Rauros, then across the Emyn Muil where he was confronted by Frodo Baggins, the ring-bearer and heir of Bilbo Baggins, and Samwise Gamgee. After a long conversation and struggles, Gollum swore by the “precious” itself and guide them to the Black Gate, the main entrance to Mordor, then to Cirith Ungol.
