Not long ago, Facebook introduced their beta version of a new profile feature called ‘Timeline’ and the new Facebook timeline layout became the trending news. Now able to be activated voluntarily for users who want to try it out, it is more than just a layout like many people expected. It is a way of presenting your entire life as you have posted it on Facebook in reverse chronological order, laying it out like a shifting story for your viewers to look through. Think of it as a digital story of how you have gone from Point A to Point B and beyond.

The Timeline Profile
One element that has put some people off is the apparent complexity of the overall layout. I will admit, it takes some getting used to. But it is much easier than it looks, and once you understand the way they have grouped everything you should feel more relaxed about viewing it. Especially when it comes to the time bar itself.
First of all, you have two main columns. The first is on the left, and it has the bulk of your recent contact, shown in expanded view. The second column on the right is for people who want a faster way to navigate through what has been published over the last 12 months. At the top of your page you have what information you want shared such as your employer, your city and your marital status. Under that is an option to go to an about page, which is like your original info page on the original profile.
The best part comes with the time bar on the far right. It has options for ‘Now’ clear down to ‘Born’. Which doesn’t mean the creation of your profile, but literally the date of your birth. Everything else is placed within a tab by year, both that you have had the profile and special events you have listed in your information. For example, it might show your anniversary and date of your graduation.
Once you have selected a year it will break up the categories into months, so you can further narrow your view if you choose. Or you can see content from the entire year.
The Timeline Pictures
Timeline has a new photo cover that has a duel picture format. The first is a large picture that works as a header. Then there is a small box with a photo in the corner on the left. This has sparked a number of creative designs from people.
As you can see, people have gotten pretty into making their own Timeline art. Which is something you can do yourself with a bit of effort. All you need is to upload the cover photo (the one on top) in the dimension of 850 w x 315 h. This can be done in any photo editing program, from Photoshop to Paint. Then select a relevant profile photo for the small box beside it. Make sure you do the dimensions exactly, because Facebook will crop and change the photo so it won’t look right.
Getting Facebook Timeline Layout
To activate Timeline, all you have to do is type it into your Facebook search box. From there select ‘Introducing Timeline’. This will take you to the main page for the app, where there will be a green button in the bottom right hand corner for you to select.
Once you have activated it, you will not be able to go back. However, you will have one week to fix your profile the way you want it before it is published, or you can select to publish immediately. Which is a nice touch, to be given a deadline that allows you to build it over time.
It has a tour option that will let you put it all together. Which is handy if you aren’t sure how to go through each step to get it the way you want.
